| Abstract: | Emetine exerts a specific effect on mitochondrial function and structure. Its action is to inhibit oxidative phosphorylation as measured by mitochondrial oxygen consumption, ADP:O ratio, and the respiratory control ratio. Our observations corelate documented specific structural abnormality with a metabolic change. These results probably account for some of the cardiotoxicity known to result from administration of emetine. |
