Thyroid Dysfunction and Pregnancy |
| |
Abstract: | Whether the mother is hypothyroid or hyperthyroid, the main danger to the fetus is congenital hypothyroidism and its ominous sequelae, especially cretinism. Present knowledge does not permit effective prophylaxis, but diagnosis very early in life and an immediate start of adequate thyroid replacement can do much to improve mental capacity and permit these children to lead self-sufficient lives. |
