Bilateral Endogenous Endophthalmitis Secondary to Group B Streptococcal Sepsis |

| Abstract: | Background: Group B streptococcus (GBS) has been reported to cause endogenous endophthalmitis in adults and children.Method: We report a 95-year old woman who was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and sepsis. She developed bilateral endogenous endophthalmitis from GBS and lost vision in both eyes. Results: A review of literature reveals that while it is not a common cause of endogenous endophthalmitis, GBS appears to have greater predilection to cause intraocular infections than other bacteria.Conclusion: Group B streptococcus must be a top suspect in endogenous endophthalmitis in lieu of a positive blood cultures, especially in cases of bilateral involvement. |
