Evaluation of left atrium function in essential hypertension by M mode echocardiography

Objective To investigate the application value of M-mode echocardiography in evaluation of left atrium structure and function in essential hypertension patients. Methods Fourty patients with I phrase essential hypertension and fourty heathy subjects were enrolled in this study. The left atrium wall, interatrial septum thickness in systole and diastoles, left atrium diameter in systole and diastoles were measured, the thickening rate of interatrial septum and left atrium wall were calculated. Results Compared with control group, left atrium wall and interatrial septum were thicker, the thickness of left atrium wall was larger than that of interatrial septum especially in systole. The thickening rate of interatrial septum and left atrium wall were increased. The morement of left atrium wall in essential hypertension patients was larger than that in control group, there was significant difference （P 〈 0.05 ）. Conclusion M-mode echocardiography has important value in evaluation of the changes of left ventrieular structure and function in patients with essential hypertension, which can be a new and convenient method for evaluating early cardiac injury of hypertension.
