Establishment of management model for rational drug use based upon PDCA cycles and clinical medication pathway

OBJECTIVE To explore the long-term mechanism of rational drug use by establishing a new management model.METHODS The clinical pathway of a certain class of drugs for a specific department in accordance with evidence-based medicine was adopted as a technical intervention and PDCA cycle method employed as an administrative intervention. Both technical and administrative interventions contributed to an initial establishment of management model. The data from January to December 2018 were analyzed.RESULTS After applying management model for rational drug use, rational drug use of antibiotics and postoperative pain control increased while the incidence of adverse reactions and per capita drug cost decreased significantly.CONCLUSION The management model for rational drug use based upon PDCA cycles and clinical medication pathway is feasible and it provides references for healthcare peers.
