Relationship between integrins and tumor's invasiviness and metastasis

The interaction between tumor cells and the ECM strongly influences tumor development, affecting cell proliferation and the survival, as well as the ability to migrate beyond the original location into other tissues to form metastasis. Many of these interactions are mediated by integrins, a ubiquitously expressed family of adhesion receptor. Integrins are essential for attachment and control cell migration, cell cycle progression and programmed cell death, responsable for regulating the tumor devolopment, invasion and metastasis in synergy with other signal transduction pathway. This article reviews the construction and function of integrins and the relationship between integrins and clinical data.
