Abstract:Web pages obtained from first 1-20 hits on medical search engines (MSE, as Group A, n=9) and general search engines(GSE, as Group B, n=9) are analyzed by SPSS 8.0 (statistical software) and Chi-square test in order to identify whether there are significant differences among their content relevance, duplicate, novelty, inactive links and so on. Also, the search results on "fever management" obtained from both Group A and Group B in answering user's requirement are evaluated by a bibliometric analysis. The results indicate that the differences are significant (p<0.05). The content relevance and duplicate of web pages obtained from Group A are less than that obtained from Group B, but the percentage of the inactive links of Group A is higher than that of Group B, and the update frequency of Group A is faster than that of Group B. The quality and integrity of information on "fever management" obtained from Group A are lower than that obtained from Group B. But the quantity of information obtained from the two groups is small. The results suggest that more useful information can be obtained by multiple search engines, and the quality of medical search engines and web pages as well as the size of medical databases should be improved.
Keywords:Search engines  Meta-search engines  Biomedical information  Information retrieval  Bibliometrics  Comparative study
