Abstract:Local levels of 5-lipoxygenase pathway products are the netresult of stimulus-induced local synthesis and subsequent degradation. These events are regulated by the interaction of leucocyteswith stromal cells and locally produced cytokines and growthfactors, and may be modulated by the fatty acid compositionof cellular membrane phospholipids and extracellular fluid unesterifiedfatty acids. A more comprehensive understanding of the regulationand modulation of the 5-lipoxygenase pathway may result in moreeffective management of inflammatory and immune disorders. KEY WORDS: 5-Lipoxygenase, Leucocytes, Eicosapentaenoic acid, Fish oil, Cytokines.
