The associations between atrial fibrillation and cognitive impairment

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in old people, and its incidence and mortality increase with age. Many vascular risk factors and vascular diseases lead to cognitive impairment and dementia, and age is the most important factor for cognitive impairment. Possible mechanisms associated with atrial fibrillation and cognitive impairment include common risk factors and comorbidities, ischemic stroke (symptomatic or asymptomatic), and the proinflammatory state of atrial fibrillation. The recovery of sinus rhythm and anticoagulation therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation may reduce the occurrence of cognitive dysfunction. This article will review the association between atrial fibrillation and cognitive impairment, possible mechanisms and cognitive benefits after AF treatment.
