Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between cervical paravertebral muscle composition and bone mineral density of in young and middle-age women.Methods Two hundred and eighteen adult women aged from 21 to 59 years old were recruited to conduct the neck quantitative computed tomography(QCT)scanning.The cross-sectional area(CSA)and average CT values of paravertebral muscle group and bone mineral density(BMD)at the C6 central plane were measured.The sample normality was tested.The means of the samples were compared using ANOVA.The interclass correlation coefficient(ICC)was used to evaluate measurement reproducibility.The correlation between paravertebral muscle group and BMD was studied with partial correlation analysis.Results Paravertebral muscle group CSA at C6 level was positively correlated with age(r=0.142,P<0.05)and body mass index(BMI,r=0.575,P<0.01).Paravertebral muscle group density was not significantly correlated with age or BMI.BMD was negatively correlated with age(r=-0.179,P<0.01),and there was no significant correlation with BMI.After adjusting age and BMI,there was no significant correlation between paravertebral muscle group CSA and BMD at C6 level,but the mean CT value was positively correlated with BMD(P<0.01).Conclusion The degree of fat infiltration in the cervical paravertebral muscle group is associated with BMD in young and middle-aged women.
