Abstract:Objective To obtain the normal reference values of volume of hippocampus and its subregions, and to explore the relationships of age, gender and the volume of hippocampus and its subregions in Chinese healthy adults. Methods Data of 100 subjects were selected from Chinese healthy adult head MRI database (Chinese 1000). The volume of hippocampus and its subregions were manually measured, and the results were statistically analyzed after standardized processing. Results There was no significant difference of volume of bilateral hippocampus and subregions between males and females of all ages (all P<0.05). The volume of left hippocampal head in males of 18-30 years old was larger than that in females (P=0.006), of bilateral hippocampal body and right hippocampal tail in females were larger than in males (all P<0.05). The total hippocampal volume and hippocampal head volume on the right side were all greater than those on the left side in both males and females (all P<0.001). Conclusion The volume of hippocampus was right lateralized, without significant difference between males and females. Among 18-30 years old healthy adults, the volume of left hippocampal head in males was larger than that in females, while the volume of bilateral hippocampal body and right hippocampal tail in females were all larger than those in males.
