Abstract: | The article deals with Uhlenhuth’s life, his scientific activities and the way he saw himself as a scientist. I would like to examine his services to the differentiation between human and animal blood. Moreover, the article points out his contributions to early chemotherapy as well as to serotherapy. In April 1933 he was committed to the compulsory removal of the Jewish colleagues from office at the medical faculty of Freiburg; this raises questions about the way he saw himself as a member of the academic community. The discussion of this issue is related to the ideas of Wilhelm von Humboldt and his concept of a modern university. |
