| Abstract: | Fifteen cases of lymphoepithelioma like carcinoma(LELC)were detected from 106 cases of tonsillar carcinoma biopsy in Tumor hospital affiliated to Sun Yat sen Univercity of Medical Sciences during the past seven years(from 1984 to 1994).Their histologic features were studied microscopically.The immunophenotype and Epstein Barr virus encoded small RNA(EBERs)in 15 cases of tonsillar LELC and 20 cases of tonsillar non LELC were detected by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization respectively.The results show:(1) Tonsillar LELC cells are morphologically identical to those of non keratinizing carcinoma especially of undifferentiated carcinoma in nasopharynx with active proliferation and aberrant expression of P53.(2) There are prominent infilterating lymphoid cells and intensive macrophages in the stroma of LELC.(3) EBERs were detected in nuclei of tumor cells in 10/15 cases of tonsillar LELC.It is suggested that the tonsillar LELC should be diagnosed as a special subtype of tonsillar carcinoma for its unique histologic features and association with Epstein Barr virus. |
