Investigation on Depression and Social Support Among People Living with HIV/AIDS

Objective: To explore social support and depression among people living with HIV/AIDS and analyze the related factors.Methods: One hundred and six people living with HIV/AIDS were selected using purposive sampling.General condition questionnaire,Social Support Scale(SSS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS) were used in the survey.One-way analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used for the result.Results: The SSS values(29.55±8.59) among people with HIV/AIDS were significantly higher than Chinese norm of SSS(P<0.01) and the SDS values(44.00±5.34) were significantly lower than Chinese norm of SDS(P<0.01).One-way analysis results suggested that people with different routes of infection and whether or not receiving treatment had differences in the scores of SSS(P<0.05),people with different ages,routes of infection and whether or not receiving treatment had differences in SDS scores(P<0.05).Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that age and infection through sexual contact were the positive factors(P<0.05),while the SSS was the negative factor(P<0.05).Conclusion: People living with HIV/AIDS had poor social support and depression than average people.Interventions should be conducted to enhance the level of social support and relieve depression of people living with HIV/AIDS.
