Effect of low-level laser irradiation on pain and periodontal health of patients with chronic periodontitis during orthodontic treatment

Objective To investigate the effect of low-level laser irradiation on pain and periodontal health of patients with chronic periodontitis during orthodontic treatment.Methods Forty-five patients with chronic periodontitis were selected from Jan 2016 to Dec 2019 in StomatologicalHospitalof Hefei.Two posteriorsingle-rooted teeth with the same name on the left and right sides of each patient, totally 180 teeth, were observed. The left and right teeth were randomly divided into observation group (90 teeth) and control group (90 teeth).The observation group received low-level laser irradiation on buccal and lingual alveolar mucosa after orthodontic treatment, while the control group received placebo.The pain score (VAS) was compared on the first, third, fifth and seventh days after laser irradiation treatment, VAS score was compared at the first, second and third months, and the plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), gingival regression (GR) were compared.Results After laser irradiation, VAS score of the observation group was lower than that of the control group on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th day (P<0.05). At the first, second and third month of subsequent visit, VAS score of the observation group was lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). At the first, third and sixth month after laser irradiation, the PI and GI values of the observation group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.05), while there was no significant difference in GR, PPD and CAL between the two groups (P>0.05).Conclusions Low-level laser treatment can reduce the pain of patients with chronic periodontitis in orthodontic treatment, and also can effectively improve the periodontal health of patients, which is worthy of clinical promotion.
