Effect of diabetes mellitus on the structures and functions of left heart in senile hypertensive patients with carotid artery atherosclerosis

Objective To study the effects of diabetes mellitus on the structures and functions of left heart in senile hypertensive patients with carotid artery atherosclerosis aged over 75 years. Methods Sixty-seven cases were divided into two groups according to whether they presented with DM. A color Doppler ultrasound system was used to investigate the related parameters of the structures and functions of left heart. Results The internal diameters of left atrium and left ventricle found in the patients with DM were remarkably larger than that in the patients without DM. The diastolic capability of left ventricle remarkably declined in the patients with DM. There was no difference between two groups in aspect to systolic capability, thickness of interventricular septum and left ventricular posterior wall. Conclusions DM enhances the damage to the structures and functions of left heart in senile hypertensive patients with carotid artery atherosclerosis aged over 75 years.
