Abstract: | Studies on plasma dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) concentrations employing a new gas chromatographic analytical method with electron capture detection were performed on women with breast cancer and benign breast disease. Significantly lower values were found in both early and advanced disease when compared with normal women. Likewise, a similar observation was made in younger women (age range 20–39 years) with benign breast disease. No significant correlation was found between plasma DHEA and plasma DHEA sulphate concentrations, nor between plasma DHEA and uirinary 11-deoxy-17-oxosteroids. This indicates that measurement of plasma DHEA may be a useful independent parameter in the study of breast cancer. |
