The delay in healing of the corneal epithelium and its effects on vision after PRK

Objective:To observe the factors that cause a delay in healing of the corneal epithelium and its effects on haze and vision after PRK.Methods:Statistical analysis was done on the following factors: method of corneal epithelium removal, the degree of inflammation and refraction.Results:274 eyes of 1705 PRK eyes (16.1%) showed a delay in healing of the corneal epithelium. One case was delayed as long as six days. The most common factor was corneal inflammation after PRK, followed by the amount of epithelium removed. Higher amounts of myopia did not cause a longer delay in epithelial healing. Vision in the delay group was significantly worse than that in the non-delay group. The degree of haze in the delay group was also more severe than that in non-delay group.Conclusion:Preventing and treating inflammation before and after PRK is the critical factor in preventing a delay in healing of the corneal epithelium. Normal or faster healing of the corneal epithelium after PRK was an important factor in producing less haze and better vision.
