| Abstract: | Recent evidence suggests that periodontal disease may play an etiologic role in the pathogenesis of several systemic illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease and preterm birth. This article reviews proposed mechanisms for such associations and outlines studies currently underway aimed at clarifying this issue. Results from this line of research may fundamentally change the way we approach our periodontitis patients. |
