Risk Factors for post-traumatic endophthalmitis

Objective To determine the risk factors for post-traumatic endophthalmitis. Methods A consecutive retrospective study of patients with open globe injury between Jan 2003 and May 2010was undertaken. Patients with post-traumatic endophthalmitis were identified and added to an endoph-thalmitis database. Any association between those parameters and the subsequent development of endophthalmitis was investigated by multiple logistic regression analysis. Results There were 434 patients were included in the study, 30 patients who developed clinically significant endophthalmitis. The frequency of endophthalmitis after open globe injury was 6.9%. Risk factors identified after multivariate analysis was dirty injury, area of injury on eye include both anterior and posterior segment, lensectomy at the time of primary repair. Conclusions Dirty injury, area of injury on eye include both anterior and posterior segment, lensectomy at the time of primary repair are each independently associated with the development of post-traumatic endophthalmitis.
