THE REUSE OF HOLLOW FIBER DIALYZERS A PRELIMINARY REPORT

Abstract:A simple, efficient and safe method for the reuseor hollow fiber dialyzers by manual procedure is in-troduced. 697 dialyses were performed using 57reused dialyzers, a mean 12.2+10.0 times each. Amongthe 57, 44 were Filtryzer Bi used for 616 times (88.4%).Two thirds of the dialyzers were reused for morethan 10 times (11-53). The efficacy in removing' BUN, creatinine andMMs appeared to be related more closely with theresidual fiber bundle volume of the reused dialyzerrather than the number or usages. A hollow fiberdialyzer should be discarded wheii its residual volumefaIls by 20'Io, not the 15U/o usually adopted. Thischange has been suggested because of our inadequatesupply of dialytic devices. Deterioration of reuseddialyzer efficacy may be compensated by prolonga-tion of each dialysis. No pyrogenic reactions, infections, formalin in- toxication, acidosis, pulmonary embolism or Iupoid syndrome was encountered clinically in this series. Further laboratory studies are required for reuse of HF dialyzers.
