| Abstract: | Objective： To find out the true level of essential medicine availability, and raise suitable policy suggestions. Methods： Standard research method of the World Health Organization （WHO） and the Health Action International （HAI） was used with improvements made to accommodate to conditions in China. Research of essential medicine availability in tl Chinese provinces and cities was carried out. Results： The median of availability for the investigated medicines was 66.67%, while that for original medicine is 15%. As for public healthcare institutions, the availability median is 73.3%. To be specific, it is 75.67% for public hospitals, 60.00% for community health service centers and 63.3% for private healthcare providers. Conclusion： The overall availability of essential medicine in China is relatively appropriate, but the value for original medicine is generally low. Availability of essential medicines is distinctively higher in public health institutions than in private healthcare institutions. |
