Influences of Radix Angelicae Sinensis on plasma glucagon levels of normal and cirrhotic dogs

It was known that glucagon takes part in forming systemic hyperkineticcirculation and portal hypertension in patients with cirrhosis. Our past studies comfirmedthat Radix Angelicae Sinensis had a beneficial effect on portal pressure in cirrhoticrats, dogs and patients.To explain the mechanism, influences of this drug on glucagonlevels(GL ) of normal and cirrhotic dogs were investigated. The results showed that afterintravenous injection of the agent(80mg/kg/min ) GL of inferior vena cava(IVC )and por-tal vein(PV )was reduced significantly compared with the basal level, but no change wasfound On GL of hepatic vein. In the cirrhotics, there was a positive correlation betweenthe decreased GL of IVC or PV and the reduced portal pressure or portal blood flow, butwas a negative correlation between it and the increased hepatic arterial blood flow, Inconclusion, Angelicae SinensiS can lower portal pressure through decreasing secretion andshunting of glucagon i n portal hypertensive dogs.
