Changes of perfusion index and pleth variability index during position changes in conscious volunteers

Objective To observe the effects of 10-degree head up position on perfusion index(PI)and pleth variability index(PVI) in conscious volunteers.Methods Thirty conscious volunteers were studied in three successive positions:supine,10-degree head up and back to supine.Noninvasive blood pressure,pulse rate,breath rate,PI and PVI were monitored and recorded.Results No significant changes were found among SBP,DBP,MAP,pulse rates and breath rates during changes in positions.From supine to head up position,PI was significantly decreased from(3.5±1.1)% to(2.6± 0.9)%(P < 0.01).PVI was increased from(16.5±6.3)% to(17.3±5.8)%(P > 0.05).After returning to supine position,PI increased significantly to(2.9±1.0)%(P < 0.01) and PVI was increased significantly to(18.9±6.8)%(P < 0.05).Conclusions Changes of PI and PVI have been found during different positions of volunteers.PI is significantly decreased in head up position.PI is also increased after returning to supine.PVI changes could not reflect volume changes in different positions of conscious volunteers.
