Changes of serum interleukin-6 and procalcitonin levels in association with lung function in patients with pneumonia

Objective To investigate the changes of serum interleukin-6(IL-6)and procalcitonin(PCT)levels in association with lung function in patients with pneumonia.Methods Pneumonia patients were enrolled from May 2019 to December 2020 and assigned to mild group(n=78)and severe group(n=50).Serum IL-6 and PCT were assayed by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay.Pulmonary function was tested,including forced expiratory volume in first second(FEV1),forced vital capacity(FVC),and peak expiratory flow(PEF).IL-6,PCT,FEV1,FVC,and PEF were compared between the two groups.The relationship between IL-6,PCT and pulmonary function outcome measures were analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis.Results The patients with severe pneumonia showed significantly higher serum IL-6 and PCT levels than the patients with mild pneumonia(P<0.05).FEV1,FVC,and PEF were significantly lower in the severe group than in the mild group(P<0.05).IL-6 and PCT levels were correlated negatively with FEV1,FVC,and PEF(r<0,P<0.05).Conclusions Serum IL-6 and PCT levels tend to increase gradually with the severity of pneumonia,which is closely associated with pulmonary function.
