Abstract:Purposes] This paper analyzes the overall situation of university journals before and after the renaming, and investigates the renamed university journals in 2013-2020, which is expected to provide data support for the renaming of university journals. Methods] We statistically analyzed the proportion of renamed university journals with reference to China Science and Technology Journal Database and elucidated the reasons for the renaming according to the information released on the official website of National Press and Publication Administration. With the methods of literature research and analogy, we further discussed the challenges facing the journals after renaming and the countermeasures.Findings] Renaming is common among university journals, and the proportion of renamed university journals is slightly higher than that of the overall renamed academic journals. The names were changed either for the variation of sponsor/competent organization (passive, 59.1%), or for transformation, upgrading, and development (active, 40.9%). The latter aims to seek unique characteristics and high quality. Thus, for journals which actively changed the names, we further analyzed the sponsors, languages, publishing cycle, disciplines, geographical distribution, and renaming frequency. The result shows that the levels of such journals are influenced by the academic levels of the sponsors and that bimonthly journals take up a large proportion. Moreover, these journals are mostly about social science and medicine and scarcely on natural science, with uneven geographical distribution. Frequent renaming is unfavorable for the stable development of journals and even has negative influence. Conclusions] Renaming is not the only way out for journals, which marks the new beginning rather than the end of them.
