Abstract:In recent decades the understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of community acquired pneumonia (CAP) has increased within the medical scientific community. The challenge remains how best to disseminate new information to the practicing clinician to facilitate improved outcomes and cost-effective care. To accomplish this end, professional organizations such as the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS) have developed and published consensus guidelines reflecting the proposed standard of medical care. Three ongoing areas of ambiguity and divergence between published guidelines and clinical practice include treatment selection, the admission decision, and the utility and role of oral therapy.
