Abstract:AIM To study the expression of COX-I and COX-2 in esophageal carcinoma and its relation to clinicopathologic characteristic. METHODS Twenty-four cases of esophageal carcinoma were studied by immunohistochemical method. RESULTS The positive rates of COX-2 expression in esophageal carcinoma were 91.7%. But there was no expression in noncancerous specimens of esophagus except one metastasized esophageal carcinoma. There was no difference of expression of COX-1 between carcinoma and noncancerous specimens. Overexpression of COX-2 in esophageal carcinoma was related to its lymph node metastasis and invasion (t= 5.05, P<0.05), but it did not correlate with age (t=0.44), gender (t=0.51), tumor size (t=0.53), depth of invasion (t=0.11), differentiation degree (t=(0.82), and pathologic grading (t=(0.71)(P>0.05). CONCLUSION The overexpression of COX-2 in esophageal carcinoma may play a crucial role in the carcinogenesis and development of cancer and lymphatic metastasis in patients with esophageal carcinoma, indicating that COX-2 may provide a target for chemopreventive strategies for esophageal carcinoma.
