Abstract: | Several possible ways of subtyping bulimia nervosa are discussed. Two possibilities, subtyping bulimia nervosa by presence or absence of a history of anorexia nervosa or presence or absence of a history of obesity, both represent interesting approaches, but there is inadequate data to support either as a subclassifying system at this point. There is considerable interest in requiring purging behavior for the diagnosis of bulimia nervosa, or for subtyping bulimia nervosa into purging vs. non-purging types. Also the issue of bow to classify over-weight bulimic individuals by DSM-Ill-R criteria who do not purge remains controversial. |
