Application of the Polyetheretherketone Material for 3D Printing of Computer Aided Design in the Repairing of Skull Defect of Children

Abstract:Objective:Demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the 3D modeling and manufacturing method of 3D printed polyetheretherketone(PEEK)material implants for children's skull defects.Methods:Seven patients with skull defects or skull bone tumors admitted to Tangdu Hospital of Air Force Military Medical University from April 2019 to December 2019 were selected.The 64-row CT thin-layer scanning image data was used for medical 3D modeling using Mimics 19.0 software.After the model is used Magics and Geomagic Wrap software for implant design,and the use of polyetheretherketone(PEEK)material for 3D printing,combined with 3D printing 1:1 model for model surgery,to help doctors perform preoperative verification and surgery planning.Results:Before the operation,CT examination was completed,and the average skull defect range was(95±40.4)cm2(25~150 cm2)or the area eroded by the tumor was(30±20.3)cm2.The CT imaging results of the patient before and 1 month after surgery showed that the area of the defect accounted for the total area of the skull(P<0.01),the area after the defect repair accounted for the area before the defect repair(P<0.01),And the defect area after repair and tumor resection(P<0.01).the patients have a significant effect after surgery.Seven patients had no postoperative complications.Among them,5 patients with bone defects completely disappeared after trauma,and 2 patients with bone tumors alleviated their symptoms.CT images showed that the implant position was stable without displacement.Conclusion:It is feasible and effective to use 3D printed polyetheretherketone material implant modeling and manufacturing procedures to treat children's skull defects.
