Autoinflation for Treatment of Chronic Otitis Media with Effusion in Children:A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Objective To syetematically evaluate the efficacy,compliance and safety of autoinflation for treatment of chronic otitis media with effusion in children via meta-analysis.Methods The PubMed,OVID,Embase,Cochrane Library,Proquest,Web of Science,Chinese Biomedical Literature Database,Wanfang,China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI)were searched for papers on autoinflation for treatment of chronic otitis media with effusion in children(up to February 2020).Statistical analysis was performed using Cochrane tools and RevMan5.2.Results A total of 12 articles met inclusion criteria and were included.Meta-analysis results showed a cure rate of 48.2%by autoinflation,superior over the controls(I2=72,OR=3.48,95%CI=1.97-6.13)(χ2=35.59,P<0.0001),especially in short-term as compared to long-term although without statistical significance.No heterogeneity was found among the four subgroups(I2=0).Except for Politzer balloon pressure devices,all other treatments demonstrated significantly different efficacy from the control group.Total compliance in included studies was 93.4%(OR=0.95,95%CI=0.92-0.98).Major complications of autoinflation were respiratory tract infection and nosebleed,which were comparable among subgroups and showing a statistically significant difference from the control group,although not conclusive due to the small number of studies included.Conclusion Autoinflation can be used as an effective non-surgical treatment in treatment of chronic otitis media with effusion in children.
