Abstract: | A systematic review and meta‐analysis were conducted to characterize the prevalence of somatoform disorders among those with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and of BPD among those with somatoform disorders. Searches of PsycINFO and PubMed revealed 34 empirical studies 1980‐present that assessed the co‐occurrence of BPD and somatoform disorders. Pooled estimates of 30% and 14% were found for the prevalence of somatoform disorders among those with BPD and of BPD among those with somatoform disorders, respectively. The results are discussed in terms of the implications for potential common mechanisms and for treatment. |
