Abstract: | Exploratory hypothesisThe representation of the mother among treated alcoholic women is specific and different from the mother's representation among non-alcoholic women.MethodologyThe present study involved 10 alcoholic women and 10 non-alcoholic women. The participants’ maternal representation, the level of dependency to alcohol and psychiatric comorbid disorders were assessed in both groups using the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI).ResultsThe mother's representation was found invading and intrusive among alcoholic women. A significant correlation between alcohol dependency and depression was evidenced.ConclusionThe mother seems omnipresent in the alcoholic woman's psychological life. Alcoholic women seem to experience unsatisfying relationships with their mother and to perceive them as omnipotent. Dependency to alcohol could be an answer to this specific type of relationship. Before being generalised and included in the existing treatment programs, these findings should be confirmed by further studies using a wider sample size. |
