Abstract:Objective To investigate the association between body mass index(BMI) and metabolic indexes and cardio-cerebral vascular disease in the elderly community residents in Beijing. Methods In a cohort study, physical examination was performed in 1 827 Beijing elderly residents in 2000.Demographic data, information of health status were also collected. Results BMI was significantly higher in women than in men,and decreased with ageing.Overweight and obesity in women were higher than those in men.The prevalence rates of overweight and obesity decreased with ageing too.The prevalence rate of the metabolic syndrome diagnosed by CDS definition was high in women.Mean systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure,FPG,TG increased and age decreased with increasing BMI;at the same time, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, abnormal fasting blood glucose, diabetes mellitus, hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia increased. The prevalence rate of coronary heart disease increased with BMI also. Conclusion Metabolic disorder and cardio-vascular disease increased with increasing BMI among elderly residents.
