Comparison of gefitinib and docetaxel in treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients who have failed to previous chemotherapy

Objective To evaluate the antitumor efficacy and toxicity of gefitinib and docetaxel in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Methods Sixty-two patients with advanced NSCLC who had failed to previous chemotherapy were randomly divided into gefitinib group and docetaxel group. Results In gefitinib group,disease controlrate was 56.3％ and one year survival rate was 37.5 ％, which showed no differences with those in docetaxel group (43.3 ％ and 33.3 ％ ). However, The incidence of rash was 56.3％ in gefitinib group, significantly higher than that in docetaxel group (10. 0％, X2 = 14.79, P ＜0. 01). The incidence of leucopenia in docetaxel group was significantly higher than that in gefitinib group (56. 7％ vs 0.0％, X2 =24.98, P ＜0. 01). The improvement rate of quality of life in gefitinib group was higher than that in docetaxel group (65.6％ vs 26.7％, X2 =9.44, P ＜0. 01 ).Conclusions Gefitinib has a similar effect of antitumor activity with docetaxel in advanced NSCLC patients who have failed to previous chemotherapy. The toxicity is lower and the improvement rate of quality of life is higher in gefitinib group.
