Abstract: | Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a highly prevalent disease. Population studies have demonstrated that a significant proportion of individuals weekly experience GERD symptoms. Barrett's esophagus (BE), defined by the presence of intestinal metaplasia (columnar epithelium with goblet cells), is considered a consequence of chronic reflux. This review defines the role of surgery in the modern treatment of BE, taking into consideration the pathophysiology of the disease and the new endoscopic procedures available at present. |
