The effect of methimazole on thyroid hormone and thyroid volume in patients with hyperthyroidism

Objective To observe the effect of methimazole treatment of hyperthyroidism(hyperthyroidism)on patients'thyroid hormones and thyroid volume.Methods Sixty-four patients with hyperthyroidism who were admitted to Dandong Central Hospital from January 2019 to January 2021 who met the admission and exclusion criteria were selected as the research objects,and their data were summarized and summarized by retrospective analysis.The patients treated with methimazole were selected.Thirty-two patients were set as the study group,and 32 patients treated with propylthiouracil were set as the control group.The thyroid hormone index levels of the two groups before treatment and after 3 months of treatment were observed and compared,including:Thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH),free thyroxine(FT4)and free triiodothyronine(FT3),compare the thyroid volume and liver function index levels of the two groups before treatment and after 3 months of treatment,including:glutamyl transpeptidase(GGT)and alanine aminotransferase(ALT).At the same time,the adverse events of the two groups after treatment were recorded and analyzed.Results Before treatment,there was no statistically significant difference in the levels of TSH,FT4 and FT3 between the two groups of patients(P>0.05);after 3 months of treatment,the levels of TSH increased while the levels of FT3 and FT4 decreased,and the level of TSH in the study group was(2.73±0.84)mIU/L,which was higher than that in the control group[(2.07±0.73)mIU/L],the levels of FT3 and FT4 were(10.24±3.66),(4.31±1.43)pmol/L,which were lower than those in the control group[(17.06±6.41),(10.23±1.40)pmol/L],the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Before treatment,there was no statistically significant difference in the ALT and GGT levels of the two groups of patients(P>0.05);after 3 months of treatment,the ALT and GGT levels of the two groups increased on average,but the levels of ALT and GGT in the study group were(40.20±3.71),(39.67±1.88)IU/L,which were lower than those in the control group[(47.45±5.53),(42.45±2.45)IU/L],the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Before treatment,there was no statistically significant difference in thyroid volume between the two groups of patients(P>0.05);after 3 months of treatment,the thyroid volume of the two groups were significantly reduced,the thyroid volume in the study group was(13.73±2.34)cm³,which was lower than that in the control group[(17.07±3.73)cm³],and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the incidence of skin pruritus,leukopenia,drug-induced hypothyroidism,and arthralgia in the study group(P>0.05);the incidence of liver damage in the study group was 3.13%,which was significantly lower than that in the control group(21.05%),and the difference was statistically significant significance(P<0.05).Conclusion Methimazole has less adverse effects in the treatment of hyperthyroidism.It effectively reduces the volume of the thyroid and improves the level of thyroid hormone in patients.It is suitable for the clinical treatment of hyperthyroidism and is worthy of promotion.
