Study on Formaldehyde Pollution in Indoor Air and Its Major Influential Factors

In an effort to characterize the major influential factors of HCHO concentration in indoor air non-dynamic and dynamic measurements of formaldehyde levels in office buildings and a residence were performed respectively. The average concen- traions in the offices with different decorating materials and cigarette smoke levels ranged from 0. 023 mg/m~3to 0. 128mg/ m~3and the indoor /outdoor ratios were 1.5~3.5. The highest concentration of 0. 593 mg/m~3was observed in a newly deco- rated meeting room. Fomaldehyde levels in a decoreted resi- dence were determined for one year. The high peak concentra- tion of 0.14mg/m~3was found in the third day after decoreting. It was about 5 times higher than that before the room decoret- ing. The formaldohyde concentration indoors remaied higher level for adout one month. Then HCHO levels gratually fell down as the temperature decreased in the winter. However the concentrations of HCHO was getting higher again in the next summer. The results indicated that there was close relation- ship between HCHO concentration and room temperature and indoor ventilation new furniture, modern decoreting materials and cigarette smoke were the main sources of indoor formalde- hyde pollution in office buildings as well as residences.
