Abstract:One hundred and thirty-four patients with either osteoarthritis orrheumatoid arthritis, and with a history of current or past non- steroidalanti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) treatment, were interviewed regarding thebenefits, expectations and side-effects of NSAID therapy. Their willingnessto accept risks in medical treatment was also evaluated. Both groupsexperienced positive effects of the NSAID treatment corresponding to theirexpectations. However, rheumatoid arthritis patients were significantlymore willing to accept gastrointestinal side-effects when given aneffective NSAID than the osteoarthritis patients, and they were also morewilling to take risks in trying a hypothetical new NSAID that had beenshown to be effective in clinical trials.
