Abstract:Purpose. To increase awareness of psychological factors in recovery from hip fracture and to describe strategies that can be used to help patients in the process of recovery.

Method and results. Psychological theory, case examples and clinical observation are used to propose three frameworks for understanding the psychological factors which can impede recovery. Indication of key strategies for assessment and intervention which can be used in rehabilitation services is provided.

Conclusions. An understanding of the psychological factors which can impede recovery in hip fracture is important for all professionals involved in rehabilitation. Psychologists can provide consultation and support for staff working in physical rehabilitation and can work directly with cases where there is complexity. There is still relatively little known about this important area and further research is needed to provide a clear evidence base.
Keywords:Psychological factors  hip fracture  rehabilitation  intervention
