Abstract: | Human peritoneal macrophages have been obtained from patients with renal disease undergoing chronic peritoneal dialysis, patients with ascites and at laparoscopy. These macrophages in general have both morphological and enzymatic characteristics of activated macrophages, as judged by criteria derived from animal experiments. Human peritoneal macrophages produce a variety of eicosanoids, including leukotriene B4 and leukotriene C4. These cells are suitable for studies on in vitro and in vivo effects of drugs, and for investigation of changes in macrophage activity occurring in human diseases. |
