Utility of intraopetative ultrasound in liver surgery

Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) has become an essential tool for the surgeon in the field of liver surgery. No preoperative study has been able to duplicate the sensitivity and specificity of IOUS in the identification of occult lesions. Intraoperative ultrasound also can guide or assist various surgical procedures in real time. In this overview of IOUS, its development, use in hepatic neoplasms, in liver transplantion, and future perspective are described. Being safe, quick, accurate, and versatile intraoperatively, IOUS is a valuable technique that surgeons are recommended to master to improve intraoperative decision making and surgical procedures.
