Effect of social network on smoking behavior of adolescents and its development in the new media era

Objective To investigate the effect and mechanism of social network on smoking behavior of adolescents and its changes in the new media era to provide references for improving smoking control policy and reducing smoking prevalence in adolescents. Methods Published studies investigating the effect of social network on smoking behavior of adolescents were retrieved. Key information, results and conclusions were extracted. Results Social network of adolescents is one of the factors influencing the initiation and development of smoking behavior, through the main mechanism of social selection and social influence. In the context of the new media era, the social relations of adolescents established via social media appear more complex and extensive, and online social network development alters their smoking behaviors in a new way. Conclusion Intervention measures based on social network have the advantage of solving problems at group level. More longitudinal,empirical studies on social selection, social influence and online social network are warranted.
