Abstract: | Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a clinico-pathological state accompanied by a high mortality rate. In order to appropriately treat this disorder the clinician must understand its basic pathophysiology and know when and with which diseases it is most likely to occur. Certain laboratory parameters can be used both to make a rapid diagnosis and monitor the patient's response to therapy. Treatment of DIC is still quite controversial, but useful guidelines can be given. Future research will hopefully expand our understanding of this disorder and result in better treatment and improved survival. |
