Abstract: | The acute toxicity of various contaminants and effluents towards a heterogenous aerobic culture has been determined using flow microcalorimetry. The toxicity of these contaminants and effluents was also evaluated towards a marine bacteria (type Photobacterium phosphoreum, Microtox test), a green algae (Selenastrum capricornutum, inhibition of growth) and a small crustacean (Daphnia magna, inhibition of mobility). The 50% (IC50) or 20% (IC20) inhibitory concentrations were obtained for each toxicity test, and compared to each other. The results of the present study suggest that, under proper conditions, a mixed aerobic culture could yield toxicity estimates comparable to those obtained from a combination of single species tests. |
