Abstract: | Polymerizations of vinyl monomers initiated with diphenyl disulfide ( 1 ) and urea were carried out in 1,4-dioxane/water (vol. ratio 7:3). Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methacrylic acid were found to be easily polymerized with this system, whereas the polymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile is not initiated. The polymerization was found to proceed by a radical mechanism. The polymerization of MMA was kinetically investigated. |
