Study on Inpatient Characteristics in a Beijing Psychiatric Hospital and Management Suggestions

Objective To analyze the characteristics of the disease spectrum of inpatients with mental illness in a Grade-A Tertiary psychiatric hospital in Beijing,with a view to proposing targeted management strategies for the hospital.Methods The home page of medical records data of 20917 inpatients with mental illness in the hospital from 2012 to 2019 was collected.The basic condition of patients,the distribution of disease types,and the trend of disease types in different genders and age groups were retrospectively analyzed.Results The ratio of male to female inpatients was 1:1.48.The median age of patients was 31 years old,with the most in the youth group(66.49%).The order of the first 6 diseases of discharged patients with mental illness did not change much,and the disease spectrum was consistent.There were gender differences in the distribution of disease types.Women had a significantly higher proportion of depressive episodes,recurrent depressive disorders,and eating disorders than men.However,men had significantly higher ratio in schizophrenia,mental and behavioral disorders caused by alcohol use,obsessive-compulsive disorders,and anxiety.The difference was statistically significant(p<0.05).The top 5 diseases in male patients and the top 4 diseases in female patients were equally distributed among different age groups and the differences among different age groups were significant(p<0.05).Conclusion The main patients in a psychiatric hospital are young people,with more women than men,and most patients with schizophrenia.According to their distribution characteristics,management strategies such as strengthening the construction of key disciplines,carrying out health education activities,and exploring clinical pathway nursing are proposed.
