High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is an important late-phase mediator,which can be released into the extracellular space by activated immune cells or necrotic cells.Extracellular HMGB1 can bind with many receptors,and then increases the expression of NF-KB and its activity,induce the excretion of multiple inflammatory factors.Studies show that inflammation involves in the development of diabetes mellitus.And HMGB1 sustains the inflammatory state associated with diabetes and its chronic complications.It is obvious that HMGB1 participates in the development of diabetes and its chronic complications.Some antagonists of HMGB1 have been applied to the animal models successfully,and it may be a new therapeutic target of diabetes.
