Application of Odyssey Silicone Plug in the Treatment of Dry Eye

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Odyssey silicone plug in the treatment of dry eye. Methods: Twenty three dry eye patients (46 eyes) were enrolled from December, 2008 to October, 2009. Questionnaire, slit lamp microscope examination, Schirmer test Ⅰ (with surface anesthesia), break-up time of tear, and fluorescent staining of the cornea were performed three days before plug insertion, and one week, one month, three months after insertion. Results: The symptoms of red eye, dry eye, and foreinbody sensation were relieved after the insertion. Only four patients needed to use artificial tears intermittently. Schirmer test Ⅰ values and break-up time of tear were increased. Fluorescent staining of the cornea epithelium was negative in 20 patients in 3 months after insertion. Conclusion: Odyssey silicone plug was proved to be an option in the treatment of dry eye which can improve the symptoms of patients. But a long term observation should be performed to identify it clinical effect.
