Abstract:Objective To analyze the features of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the amygdala and hippocampus in non-clinical depressive symptoms (nCDSs) subjects. Methods Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to define the depressive severity in 1105 college students, and then 17 subjects with nCDSs (nCDSs group) and 20 health controls (control group) were enrolled and underwent fMRI. Bilateral amygdala and hippocampus were used as the seed regions to perform voxel-based rsFC analysis. The rsFC alteration between the two groups was investigated, and then the correlation between the BDI scores and rsFC values in nCDSs subjects was analyzed. Results Compared with control group, nCDSs group exhibited increased rsFCs in the right medial orbital frontal lobe when bilateral amygdala as seed regions, and increased rsFCs in the right lingual gyrus, bilateral rectus and left precuneus when left hippocampus as seed region, as well as increased rsFC in the right posterior cerebellum lobe, right lingual gyrus, bilateral rectus, left precuneus and left paracentral lobule when right hippocampus as seed region. There was no significant correlation between the altered rsFCs values and BDI scores in nCDSs subjects (P>0.05). Conclusion The altered rsFCs of the amygdala and hippocampus may be biomarkers that are related to the pathophysiology of nCDSs.
